What size backpack does my child need?
The easiest way to determine the
best size backpack for your child is to measure the width and height of their back. The backpack or rucksack should sit comfortably on a child's shoulders and remain well-balanced to make sure that the weight is evenly distributed. Measure your child's back from the shoulder line to their waistline and then add 5 cms. Ideally, a child's backpack should sit around 5 cms below their shoulders and 10cms below their belly button. We have a range of sizes from
Small and Small Plus (S+), up to
Medium and
Large, all designed for children aged between 3 and 12 years old. The dimensions of each kids' rucksack is clearly shown on every product page, so you can gauge whether it will fit your child's back.
How do I choose a kids' backpack?
Finding the right backpack for your child isn't always easy. You need to factor in their size, how much they will be carrying, as well as making sure you have the right colour corresponding to their school uniform, not to mention trying to incorporate their favourite Disney character! It might seem an impossible task, but Samsonite has a number of great options to help you get the best backpack for your litte one.
Anna and Elsa from
Frozen,
Minnie Mouse,
Mickey Mouse and
Donald Duck backpacks are all on hand to bring the Disney magic to their daily lives, or if they're all about
Spider-Man and
Star Wars, we've got the perfect
superhero or intergalactic option. Our
Happy Sammies collection comes in various cute animal shapes and is ideal for younger children.
What size backpack is good for a 4 year old child?
Samsonite has a range of kids' backpacks which are suitable for
children aged between 3 and 6. These are generally S and S+ size backpacks which are specifically designed for little backs and shoulders. They are often equipped with playful, 3-dimensional elements and come with features to
ensure maximum comfort. Older children can find tailored backpacks for
5 to 12 year olds.
What's the maximum weight my child should carry in a backpack?
A general rule is to
never to let your child carry more than 10-20% of their body weight. In practice, an average 6 year old weighs around 20kg (or just over 3 stone), meaning their rucksack should never be heavier than 2 kg (or 2 large bags of sugar). But ideally children shouldn't be carrying too much throughout the day as their bodies are still growing. Samsonite's children's backpacks are designed to be
lightweight which in turn takes away unnecessary carrying weight for your little ones.
